Sama Dance, Dervishes in the Ceremony

September 29, 2018 – Rockville, MD, U.S – Sep 29, 2018, A birthday ceremony for one of the famous poet, Rumi, at Johns Hopkins University, Rockville campus. The whirling dance or Sufi whirling that is proverbially associated with dervishes is best known in the West by the practices of the Mevlevi order in Turkey and Iran and is part of a formal ceremony known as the Sama. Sep 30 is Mowlavi (Rumi) birthday. Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Balkhi was a 13th-century #Persian #Muslim poet, jurist, Islamic #scholar, theologian, and #Sufi mystic originally from Greater Khorasan.

  1. Very impressive! That is really a historical gallery for Sama dance for showing one of the characteristic traditional practices of dervishes and Sufi’s. It is so exciting to have this eastern-derived, Rumi’s-based phenomena in the metropolitan greater Washington DC area in birth anniversary of Rumi in late 2018.
